Renaming of 8th Street to Rio Salado Parkway

After public outreach, community input, and presentations to various Boards and Committees, the City of Mesa City Council approved renaming 8th Street to Rio Salado Parkway from Mesa city limits at the Loop 101 to Country Club Drive on December 10, 2012.  The effective date of this street name change will be March 11, 2013.

Now that the name change has been approved, the following steps and actions will be taken:



Street Name Transition Plan
  • Effective date will be 90 days after City Council approval.
  • Public notification by mail to residents and businesses on 8th Street between Loop 101 and Country Club Drive or in the surrounding affected area.
  • Once the street name change becomes effective, a direct mailer to all 8th Street addresses will serve as official notification that their address have been changed.
  • Dual street name signs will be installed along the corridor. These aluminum street name signs will display both 8th Street and Rio Salado Parkway and will be up for 12 months. Final signage will be installed showing only Rio Salado Parkway at the end of this period.


City of Mesa Roles and Responsibilities

City staff will coordinate changing the street name in City systems, databases, and maps including emergency services. Additionally, staff will notify Maricopa County, State of Arizona and the United States Postal Service of the street name change.



Affected Citizens' Roles and Responsibilities
As stated in the policy, the affected owners, residents, and tenants will be responsible for changing, at their cost, all other records and/or documents they deem appropriate.
