H Mart to bring Asian-American supermarket to Mesa
Today, New Jersey-based H Mart, an upscale Asian-American supermarket chain, announced it will open its first Arizona store in the 63,000 square foot former Albertson’s building at the southeast corner of Main Street and Dobson Road in west Mesa.
“We are pleased to be in the City of Mesa, the first expansion city for the State of Arizona,” H Mart President Brian Kwon said. “The City and community have been incredibly positive and we look forward to our 13th state opening.”
H Mart will invest more than $7 million in renovations in its flagship Arizona store and will employ approximately 100 people. The new store will stock more than 40,000 items featuring a wide variety of Asian, Hispanic and American foods and related products. The store will also include a pharmacy, cosmetics store, gift shop and an Asian food court with as many as seven restaurants and a Korean bakery.
“We are absolutely thrilled that H Mart has chosen Mesa as the home for their first Arizona location. They are making a very significant investment in the property and in our community. H Mart has a great reputation regionally and nationally,” City of Mesa Vice Mayor Dennis Kavanaugh said. “West Mesa continues to see the Asian retail market grow and it is quickly becoming the Arizona epicenter for Asian groceries, goods and outstanding restaurants.”
H Mart employs over 3,500 people nationwide and has 52 stores in 11 states. The company serves more than 20,000 shoppers per week per store grossing annual sales exceeding $1 billion. All H Mart stores are supported by five warehouse/distribution centers located in New Jersey, Maryland, Illinois, Georgia and California, and one primary food processing facility in New York.
Construction is expected to take approximately five months with an anticipated opening in 11 to 12 months.
Cambridge Properties helped to facilitate the real estate transaction.
