THINKspot’s Level Up! Game Dev Challenge

Kids and teens, can build a video game and compete for prizes during THINKspot’s “Level Up! Game Dev Challenge.” Compete individually or as a team to build your own video game between now and early January, then present it to the judges and the public at Demo Day. Attend one of the kickoff sessions on Thurs., Oct. 6 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. or Sat., Oct. 8 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at THINKspot, located at the Red Mountain Library, 635 N. Power Rd. Competition is open to those in grades 5-12.
At the kickoff sessions students will learn about this multi-month challenge, use free software, learn about the game requirements and what to do if you need help along the way.
The coach, Mike Savarese, is a Game Developer and Software Engineer and will provide ongoing support throughout the program. Savarese, will be available at THINKspot on Tuesday or Thursday evenings and some Saturday mornings. In addition to coaching, drop-ins are also encouraged to work alongside other participants in the challenge. Specific dates for Level Up! Drop-Ins are listed on the library’s events calendar. “Who knows, this could be the start of a career in game design,” Mesa THINKsopt Librarian, Laura Royal said. “This challenge is a great way to be creative, have fun, and learn the skills needed to code simple and complex games. We’re looking forward to what our game developers come up with!”
Mesa THINKspot is a collaborative workspace and makerspace within the Red Mountain Branch of the Mesa Public Libraries. People can find tools and programs to help them innovate, start or build a business, and learn a new skill. The space features training on 3D printers and other devices, Collaboration Rooms with SMARTboards, and programs on technology and new ideas.
