Writer in Residence office hours and workshops at Mesa Public Library

Aspiring writers can now utilize another resource in improve their writing skills. Melissa Marr, award-winning author best known for her internationally bestselling “Wicked Lovely” series and her children's Norse mythology series “The Blackwell Pages,” is utilizing the Mesa Public Library as part of the Writers in Residence Program. The program is supported by the Arizona State Library, a division of the Secretary of State, with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

“The Writer in Residence program is a fantastic opportunity to increase the visibility of local authors and spark interest in their work,” Mesa Library Director, Heather Wolf said. “Anything that increases community involvement in reading and writing is a win for the library and our community.”

Marr will host office hours for one-on-one meetings with aspiring writers and offer free writing workshops for the public, beginning in March.

The Bones of Fiction

Curious about what it would be like to write a novel? Daunted by the idea of doing so? Marr breaks it down - world building, character, and avoiding writer's block. This fun and practical session will share the tricks and secrets of getting the story on the page, from creating a realistic - yet imaginative - sense of space to building your world’s entire infrastructure. Come ready to ask questions and participate!

Action in Fiction

Novels need action, but that action should be a logical part of the story. Marr covers some basic weapons (synthetic longsword, steel longsword, synthetic German messer, and staff) and how to incorporate them into your fiction. Please note that weapons will be present and attendees are welcome to take a swing (under supervision).

Marr is the author of several adult novels, a manga series, a picture book (BUNNY ROO) several romances, and a thriller, as well as co-editor of several fantasy anthologies. Her first board book released in January 2017, and her upcoming releases include a young adult fantasy novel, another picture book (2018), and two essays in charity anthologies for mental health issues. Unlike many authors, Marr straddles multiple genres.

Prior to being a writer, Marr taught university literature and gender studies. Her books have been published in 28 languages and have been bestsellers in numerous countries.
