OCT 7: Garden Multi-Tasking: Edible Flowers and Seed Saving. Don’t miss this fun workshop by Catherine, The Herb Lady, where she will explain how edible flowers and seed saving creates multiple benefits in your garden. She will discuss regional adaptation for stronger plants and edible flowers multitasking from garden to kitchen. Catherine will also answer your gardening questions and tell you what to plant NOW!

Oct. 4 -OR- Oct. 14 from 9:15-11:15 a.m. FALL IRRIGATION CLINIC. Learn how to layout and design a system, repair valves and timers, and system maintenance. Taught by Home Depot staff, Bob and Melissa. Red Mountain Multigenerational Center, 7550 E. Adobe St. in Mesa. Space is limited, call to register at 480-218-2221.

Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m. FREE RIDE-IN-MOVIES AT THE PARK. You bring blankets and we’ll supply the popcorn. Families are encouraged to ride their bicycles or walk to the park. Remember your helmets and bike lights! This month… Hocus Pocus at Mountain View Park, 845 N Lindsay Road.

Oct. 21 from 8 a.m. to Noon HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE EVENT at the East Mesa Service Center, 6935 E. Decatur. Collection events are scheduled 4 times each year to collect paints, oil, pesticides, batteries, CFLs, prescription drugs, tires, electronics and appliances.

Oct. 21 from 5-9 p.m. CELEBRATE MESA - be sure to stop by this family event at the Red Mountain Soccer Complex, 905 N. Sun Valley Blvd. Enjoy games, rides, music, and a giant zip line. Look for the City of Mesa Environmental Management & Sustainability Department just as you enter (next to the haunted bus) and participate in our fun activities for great prizes! FREE!

ADJUST YOUR TIMER! If you haven’t adjusted your irrigation controller in a while, now is the time to do so. Water needs for plants are about half as much as they were in June. Check out these step-by-step instructions to reprogram your timer.

PLANT OF THE MONTH: PODRANEA: A climber and beautiful pink fall blooms!

Can it be RECYCLED? Plastic Bags and Plastic Wrap. YES, they are recyclable, but NO, they are NOT accepted in the blue barrel because they get tangled in the machines used to sort recyclables. However, plastic bags and wrap are accepted, by your local grocer, then sent to be recycled. Please help keep plastic out of the waste stream. Email us your mailing address to get a reusable (and washable) bag.

  • OCT 20-21: Arizona Audubon: Enchanted Trail (Sendero Encantado). The Enchanted Trail (Sendero Encantado) is a free annual, bilingual, educational family festival that teaches children and adults about nature, science, and Arizona's nocturnal wildlife.   • OCT 20: 13th Annual EarthFest Educators Night at the Phoenix Zoo. Learn  more about this great event for K-12 teachers!
  • OCT 22: Wings & Things: Attracting Pollinators. Would you like to create a pollinator habitat for butterflies, hummingbirds and bees? Master Gardener, Gail Morris brings incredible expertise on the topic. She is the Coordinator of the Southwest Monarch Study and participates with other amazing organizations. Register.
  • OCT 28: Mesquite Pancake Breakfast. Come on out and enjoy a scrumptious breakfast including pancakes made from mesquite flour! You’ll also be supporting Trees Matter, a nonprofit supporting tree planting in the Valley. Details.
