Special Devices Inc. breaks ground on $25M expansion of Mesa facility

Post Date:03/16/2015 1:01 PM

Special Devices Inc. (SDI), a manufacturer of initiators used in the production of airbag inflators, broke ground today on a 64,000 square foot expansion of its facilities in Mesa. SDI acquired 19.6 acres adjacent to its existing facility and will invest more than $25 million in the expansion. Over the next 12 months, the company will create 175 jobs with an average annual wage of $40,000. The expansion is expected to be complete in early 2016.

SDI’s parent company, Daicel Corporation decided to expand the Mesa facility to create its second United States airbag inflator manufacturing plant. The expansion reinforces Daicel’s automotive airbag inflator business and meets the increasing demand for airbag inflators in North America, the world’s largest market and the rapidly growing market in Central and South America.

“This expansion project is a huge step forward in the growth of SDI and Daicel,” SDI Chief Operating Officer Nick Bruge said. “We have had tremendous cooperation from the City of Mesa as well as the State of Arizona and Maricopa County in making this happen to help meet the needs of our customers.”

The expansion follows the decision by SDI in 2009 to consolidate all of its North American automotive operations in Mesa, in large part, because of the City’s “business friendly” attitude.

“With operations worldwide, Daicel had a choice about where to expand their business,” Mayor John Giles said. “I am proud that they chose Mesa and excited for the 175 new manufacturing careers that come with it. Mesa’s friendly and fast development process and partnership with great companies like SDI make projects like this happen.”

SDI’s expansion is planned in phases. Today’s groundbreaking is for seven buildings and will be used as assembly space. The second phase is scheduled to increase the expansion to nearly 122,000 square feet which will be triggered by future production levels and demands.

“SDI has been a great partner to the City of Mesa and this new development opportunity illustrates its commitment to the Falcon Field Employment District,” District 5 Councilmember David Luna said. “This expansion signals revitalization and SDI's dedication to our community.”

The expansion is expected to be complete in early 2016. SDI supplies automotive air bag initiators for the North, Central and South American markets as well as the European and Asian automotive industries. Since 1990, SDI initiators have saved more than 49,000 lives.
