Mayor's Youth Committee
The Mayor's Youth Committee is a select group of juniors and
seniors from high schools throughout Mesa. Each year, school
principals and counselors choose students to represent their
school on the committee. In 2010, the program was expanded to
include schools in Mesa outside the Mesa Public Schools system.
MYC is a year-long program where students attend monthly
meetings, participate in community service opportunities, tour
city departments and projects, and research current city issues.
The students interact with the Mayor, City Council and City
staff on a regular basis to learn the ins and outs of city
government. |

The capstone project is the Mayor's Assignment where the
students work in teams to research a current Mesa issue. MYC
members present their findings to the Mayor with comprehensive,
well thought-out arguments including visual presentations to
support their research. Mayor's Assignment topics have included
issues such as Fiesta District redevelopment, the light rail
extension through downtown, Major League Baseball spring
training, and privatization of city services.
Students who successfully complete the requirements of the MYC
program participate in a special graduation ceremony in the
spring with the Mayor and their friends and family in
attendance.
