On Memorial Day of 2010, Kurt Castaneda, a Mesa Firefighter, witnessed
an accident while off-duty. He witnessed a head on collision in
East Mesa and did all the right things. One car carrying a woman
and a car carrying three teens were involved.
Kurt called Fire Dispatch to get fire/paramedic units on the way and
then did his triage to find the woman deceased and the teens critically
injured.
He helped to keep bystanders from attempting to move the teens,
managed traffic and keep control of the scene until Fire/EMS units
arrived.
The involved teens are consistently and currently in touch with the
Kurt, having been to his station for Thanksgiving dinner and other
occasions.
One of the girls was initially unable to walk, but is now walking and
recovering. The group has developed a friendship with Kurt.
The Fire Department recognized Kurt at his home Station on April 12.
Mesa
is very excited to have the Tree City USA Designation from the National
Arbor Day Foundation. It was through requests from our residents to
Councilmembers that encouraged the City to pursue the title. Trees
provide critical benefits to our communities including shade and
cooling, the capture and cleaning of polluted urban runoff, the
reduction of greenhouse gasses and improvements to our air quality. Mesa
will continue to properly care for our trees and urban forests to
sustain this important resource while also adding to the beauty and
livability of our city.
