September's Safety Message
- Don't Wait for an Emergency to Prepare!
Across the U.S., disasters disrupt hundreds of
thousands of lives each year. To increase public
awareness of the importance of being prepared and to
provide individuals, families, and businesses
information on “how to prepare“, the Department of
Homeland Security has designated September as
National Preparedness Month.
In its Ready Campaign, the Department lists four
basic steps to prepare:
-
Get a kit,
-
Make a plan,
-
Be informed, and
-
Get involved.
Whether you stay home during an emergency or
evacuate to another area or shelter, energy
utilities may be affected during emergencies. Make
knowledge of energy safety part of your preparedness
plans. Know how to recognize an energy emergency
and how to react:
-
If you hear hissing, or smell “rotten eggs”
there may be a gas leak. Get to a safe location
and call 480-644-4277 or 911;
-
A sparking transformer is dangerous. Stay away,
get to a safe location and call 911 or
480-644-2266!
During an emergency, after an emergency, and always…
stay safe. That means being prepared and informed.
Preparedness and safety is everyone’s
responsibility!
