Project Details

The City of Mesa has identified the need to replace the existing city utilities (water, gas, and wastewater lines) on Main Street between Mesa Drive and Gilbert Road and a small portion of Mesa Drive south of Main Street. These areas were evaluated by the City of Mesa’s Water Resources and Resources Departments and were determined to have reached the end of their useful life and must be replaced due to their poor condition. In addition, storm drain capacity is needed on Main Street to reduce the periodic flooding downstream and within the project boundary.

The existing water lines within the project were installed between 1927 and 1973. The existing gas lines were installed between 1939 and 1976. Portions of Main Street have a history of poor drainage during rain storms. The recently adopted Storm Drain Master Plan recommends additional capacity in the existing storm drain system in this area to meet current standards and reduce the potential for flooding. New catch basins will also be added to meet current requirements.

The wastewater lines were installed between 1943 and 1951. Inspection of these lines showed advanced signs of aging with failures or degradation that includes cave-ins, sags and root intrusion.

Funding for the utilities work is available from the Preliminary FY 2011/2012 Water and Gas Bond Programs and the storm drain work from the existing Storm Sewer Bond proceeds.
