The Mesa Grande Ruins, as it exists
today, has survived modern man’s inquisitive nature and numerous
scientific excavations. Since the City of Mesa acquired
the site in 1985, studies regarding the stabilization of the
site have been conducted. Preservation efforts at Mesa
Grande have been undertaken by the Southwest Archaeology Team
(SWAT), a group affiliated with the AzMNH. At various
times, volunteers have either used plastic to cover exposed
walls or have covered some areas with soil in an effort to
reduce erosion. Because of a generous grant from the
Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, and the
availability of Cultural Impact Fees, the visitor’s center has
been designed, bid and is now ready to be constructed.
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community grant,
Cultural Impact Fees and funds from private sources will fund
these improvements consisting of the visitor’s center (989
square feet), outdoor covered staging area (1,975 square feet)
and parking (16 stalls). The architectural design of the
Visitor Center has taken into account the sensitive nature of
the site to ensure minimal impact.
The total award amount is
$658,209.20, comprised of the low bid of $598,372.00 plus
$59,837.20 (10% allowance for change orders). Funding is
available utilizing the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian
Community Grant ($54,893), Cultural Impact Fees
($518,251), and funding from the AzMNH Foundation and AzMNH
Guild ($85,065.20).
