City of Mesa District 3 Councilmember Dennis Kavanaugh was elected to the National League of Cities' (NLC) Board of Directors on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the culmination of the NLC annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas.

Councilmember Kavanaugh became Mesa's first ever NLC board member and will serve a two-year term. This board carries the responsibility of shaping priorities and directing the activities of the oldest and largest national organization representing municipal governments throughout the United States. NLC is governed by a Board of Directors, made up of the president, first vice president, second vice president, all past presidents still in government service and 40 other members. NLC's mission is to strengthen and promote cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance.

"I very much appreciate my colleagues' support and I look forward to working on behalf of the City, the NLC and its members," Councilmember Kavanaugh said. "It is an honor to be a part of the board and I am looking forward to the opportunity to engage with different elected officials from all over the country.”

Councilmember Kavanaugh recently served on the NLC Information Technology and Communications Steering Committee, which explores the need for a national infrastructure in place to support a common broadband platform, the role of cities in advancing broadband and local preemption of telecommunications companies.

The National League of Cities is an association of the nation’s cities and state municipal leagues. Representing more than 19,000 cities, towns and villages, NLC was founded in 1924. For more information, visit http://www.nlc.org.
