Mesa FraudSTOP
Welcome to Mesa FraudSTOP, a program of the
Mesa Police Department committed to educating our older adult
residents about fraud. We offer educational materials, as well
as presentations to community groups. This web class on "Fraud
Schemes and Con Games" was designed to expand the reach of the
program to those residents who are unable to attend a
presentation. Please review the information provided and
complete the Fraud Quiz at the end of this section.
Introduction
Arizona consumers lose approximately $200 million to
fraudulent schemes each year, according to the Office of the
Arizona Attorney General. Although many people think they are
too savvy to fall for a fraud scheme, anyone can be a victim of
fraud -- the educated, the socially active, the young and the
old.
Con artists enter your life through the mail, the phone, the
computer, or in person. They may even pitch their product in a
legitimate local newspaper. Although there are many types of
fraudulent schemes and con games, they all share the same goal
-- to separate you from your money.
They also share the tactic of offering you something,
but requiring something from you first. This
"something" is either your money or your personal information
that will give them access to your money. In addition, if you
participate in just one of these fraudulent schemes, your name
will be placed on a "sucker" or "mooch" list and you will be
inundated with mail and phone calls about other "opportunities."
