On October 18, 2008 at 1:08 am, Anthony Canales was the driver
of a motor vehicle involved in a two-vehicle collision. Anthony
was driving a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am southbound on Alma School
Road in the number one lane. The Grand Am moved right on the
roadway into the number two (curb) lane. There was a 2004 Toyota
truck that was southbound in the curb lane. The Grand Am struck
the Toyota at the drivers side rear tire. This caused the Toyota
to lose control and roll over. There were six occupants in the
truck. Two were ejected from the truck. 28-year-old Eloisa
Flores was ejected and later died from her injuries. 8-year-old
Marco Flores was ejected from the truck. He suffered a skull
fracture from the collision. Sandra Valdez was pregnant and lost
her baby as a result of the collision.
A witness who heard the collision saw a Pontiac Grand Am fleeing
the area westbound on LaPlata. The witness stated that the
passenger headlamp was missing and the vehicle had damage to the
front passenger side. The vehicle was located on LaPlata just
east of Standage. The vehicle was registered in New Mexico to
Alex R. Lovato, who was later identified as a passenger in the
Grand Am. Through their investigation, detectives were able to
identify Anthony Canales as the driver in this tragic fatal
collision.
