January 3, 2008

On January 3, 2008 at approximately 6:00 p.m. Mesa Police responded to a beauty supply business located at 3630 E. Southern in Mesa, AZ reference an armed robbery that had just occurred.  Mesa Police located and arrested defendant, Dominic E. Avina, 26, in Phoenix, AZ.

Upon arrival, Mesa Police discovered Avina had entered the business and attempted to purchase an item.  While purchasing the item, Avina reached into the open cash register and took money from the register.  Avina ran out of the business and stated to the employee/cashier, “Don’t follow me. I have a gun.”

Mesa Police obtained a description of Avina’s vehicle from witnesses on scene.  The Mesa Police Air Unit was on active patrol and located the described vehicle driving westbound on US 60 at Country Club. The Mesa Police Air Unit followed the white Ford Explorer into Phoenix city limits.

The Air Unit estimated Avina was traveling approximately 80 MPH while traveling on I-10 and several city streets.  Avina was also observed driving on the wrong side of the street at on-coming traffic and failed to stop to several red light intersections. Avina ended up colliding into a chain link fence in the area of 4600 S. 17th Way in Phoenix. Avina immediately fled on foot and Mesa Police took him into custody a short time later.

Avina was positively identified as being the individual who entered the beauty supply business.  In addition, Avina is responsible for an armed robbery that occurred at a business in Mesa, AZ on December 20, 2007.

At this time several cities throughout the valley are in the process of determining whether Avina is responsible for various armed robberies that have occurred in their jurisdictions.
