Mesa Police Memorial Recognizes Fallen Officers
May 5, 2008
On Monday, May 5, 2008, at 8:30 am, the Mesa Police Department
will host a time of remembrance in recognition of law
enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of
duty. The event will take place in front of the police memorial
at Mesa Police Department headquarters located at 130 N. Robson.
In 2007, five Arizona law enforcement officers died in the line
of duty and 187 were killed nationwide. As National Police Week
approaches, it is important to take time to recognize the
legacies that each of these officers have left behind. Being a
police officer is more than just a job, it's a calling. One that
is dedicated to a life of service to members of the community.
The Mesa Police Department recognizes Town Marshal Hyrum Smith
Peterson and Officer Steven Paul Pollard for their courage,
strength and commitment to the citizens of Mesa. Officer Steve
Pollard was killed in the line of duty on November 27, 1994,
when he was struck by a vehicle during a traffic stop.
Marshal Hyrum Smith Peterson was killed in the line of duty on
November 12, 1913. He was shot by a theft suspect that he had
witnessed trying to steal a bicycle. Peterson gave chase and
caught the suspect at the edge of town where he was shot and
killed.
Citizens and members of the media are invited to attend the
memorial. The Mesa Police memorial is located just outside of
the headquarters building.
