Settlement Reached In Madrigal Case

June 10, 2009

Today, the City of Mesa and the Madrigal family have mutually resolved a case that began in 2003. This resolution does not indicate wrong doing on the part of police personnel. Rather, it is a business decision designed to conclude a difficult period for all concerned.

As we know, police work is extremely hazardous and our officers are placed in dangerous and unpredictable situations every day. Mesa police officers are well trained and willingly take on these risks because of their commitment to protecting our community.

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office reviewed this case and determined the officers acted properly. Unfortunately, even when police officers act appropriately, as they did in this case, tragic outcomes sometimes occur.

Hopefully, this resolution provides closure to a very difficult situation for all involved.
