Mesa Police Seek Assistance With Molestation Investigation
September 4, 2009
In
April 2008, two adult male victims disclosed to detectives that
a relative, Ruben Myers (seen here in photo), sexually molested
them as children. They indicated that a third family member was
also molested by Myers. Both victims stated that these incidents
occurred from 1974 to 1992.
In May 2009, detectives located and interviewed the third victim
and he also disclosed that he was molested by Myers as a child.
The victims indicated that they were molested from the age of
five until they were approximately eighteen years old. The
victims decided to come forward when they learned that Myers was
temporarily residing with a family member that had young
children. Detectives interviewed the children and they did not
disclose any inappropriate behavior or touching.
Based on their investigation, detectives were able to develop
probable cause to arrest Ruben Myers. On July 10, 2009, Ruben
Myers was arrested and booked into the Mesa Police Department
Holding Facility for 13 counts of Sexual Conduct with a Minor, 8
counts of Molestation of a Child and 1 count of Sexual Abuse.
Follow-up investigation revealed that Myers volunteered for the
Helaman House from 1996 to 1998. The Helaman House is a
residential treatment center for young male juveniles ages
twelve to seventeen that have behavioral issues. Family members
reported that Myers volunteered as a Pop Warner Football coach
in Mesa from 1982 to 1998.
Due to Myers' prior volunteer history, there is the possibility
that there may be other victims who have not come forward. The
department is asking that anyone with information contact the
Mesa Police Department at 480-644-2211.
