Dr. Ogbonnaya Re-Arrested On Additional Charges
June 25, 2010
Dr. Gabriel Ogbonnaya was arrested at approximately 3:00 p.m.
today at his Mesa medical office. In addition to the original
two counts of sexual abuse, he now has an additional eight
counts of sexual abuse and two counts of sexual assault.
Ogbonnaya was originally arrested on June 9, 2010 when two
female patients came forward and reported that he had touched
them inappropriately during office visits. As a result of the
first case, six additional victims came forward. Each victim
gave similar information as to their visits with Ogbonnaya. All
of the victims were female and have no relationship or
friendship with each other.
Detectives have fielded more than 25 calls in reference to
Ogbonnaya since the arrest on June 9. Through the interviews,
probable cause for the new charges was developed. Over the past
two weeks, detectives have consulted with the Maricopa County
Attorney's Office several times, and the Maricopa County
Attorney's Office was fully aware that Ogbonnaya was going to be
re-arrested.
When detectives arrived at his office, they were told that
Ogbonnaya was not available and they would have to speak to his
attorney. The staff refused to unlock the doors from the lobby
to allow them access to Ogbonnaya. Detectives were certain that
he was in the office and had to access the back of the office by
going over a counter. Ogbonnaya was found locked in his office
and, after several minutes of negotiation, he unlocked the door
and was taken into custody.
Ogbonnaya was transported to Mesa Police headquarters, where he
was booked for two counts of sexual assault and three counts of
sexual abuse. Five additional counts of sexual abuse have been
added to his original arrest from June 9.
