Mesa Police Conduct Labor Day Sobriety Checkpoint

September 5, 2010

On Monday, September 6, 2010, the Mesa Police Department will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in conjunction with DUI saturation patrols in an effort to curb impaired driving over the Labor Day holiday weekend. The sobriety checkpoint will be conducted on Power Road, just north of Thomas. The operation will begin at 1:00 pm and end at approximately 6:00 pm. This location was selected due to the high number of impaired drivers who use this route to return to Mesa from the lake and river recreation sites.

As part of an effort by law enforcement agencies statewide, the Mesa Police Department will enforce a zero tolerance policy toward drivers impaired by alcohol and/or drugs. Persons found to be consuming alcohol under the age of 21 will also be cited. Driving impaired is a serious offense that kills nearly 17,000 people nationwide each year. Sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols increase the perceived risk of arrest and thereby influence drivers to make the right choice, while reminding the general public that impaired driving is a crime.
