Mesa Police Department Memorial Recognizes Fallen Officers
May 1, 2011
On Monday, May 2, 2011 at 8:00 am, the Mesa Police Department
will host a time of remembrance in recognition of law
enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The event will take place in front of the police memorial at
Mesa Police Department headquarters, 130 North Robson.
In 2010, 152 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty
nationwide. In 2011, law enforcement has seen an alarming
increase in line of duty deaths. As recently as this weekend, we
have felt that loss here in Arizona. It is important for us to
take the time to recognize the legacies that each of these
officers have left behind. Being a police officer is more than
just a job, it's a calling. One that is dedicated to a life of
service to members of the community.
The Mesa Police Department recognizes Town Marshal Hyrum Smith
Peterson and Officer Steven Paul Pollard for their courage,
strength and commitment to the citizens of Mesa. Officer Steven
Pollard was killed in the line of duty on November 27, 1994 when
he was struck by a vehicle during a traffic stop. Marshal Hyrum
Smith Peterson was killed in the line of duty on November 12,
1913. He was shot after giving chase to suspects he had
witnessed stealing a bicycle.
Citizens and members of the media are invited to attend the
memorial service.
