Mesa Police Department Crime Free Hotel Motel
Program
The Crime Free Hotel/Motel
Program is designed
to be a law enforcement driven program and
allows
for a strong working relationship between law
enforcement and management within the
hotel/motel
industry.
How It Works
The Crime Free Hotel/Motel Program is a unique certification program and
can be a valuable asset to all hotel/motel properties no matter the size.
This police-sponsored program is designed to be very easy and yet extremely
effective at reducing criminal activity. Property managers and/or other
designated employees would need to complete a short training session to
learn about the program and basic crime prevention strategies.
The Crime Free Hotel/Motel Program addresses these topics:
- Understanding Crime Prevention
- C.P.T.E.D. (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) Concepts
- The Registration Process
- Active Property Management
- Combating Crime Problems
- Police response to calls for service
Training
Upon completion of the training program, each employee that takes the
training will receive a certificate of completion. You should take one of
these certificates and frame and display it at the front desk.
Remember, you are not a crime free property at this point. To be considered
Crime Free, you MUST successfully complete and pass a security
assessment of your property (a CPTED inspection).
C.P.T.E.D. (Crime Prevention
Through Environmental Design)
An authorized representative of the Mesa Police Department will inspect
the property to assess physical security and general appearance of the
property. The security assessment will include looking at the locks,
lighting and landscaping. The property must meet the minimum C.P.T.E.D.
requirements set forth in the inspection process to become a Crime Free
property. Upon successful completion of this phase, you will receive a
certificate stating your property has met the minimum requirements of the
Crime Free Hotel/Motel Program. To be considered a fully-certified Crime
Free property, you must follow certain guidelines which include:
- Receive a positive photo identification of
all your guests
- Lighting, locks and landscaping requirements
(available from your crime prevention officer or
Crime Free program administrator)
- Have screening procedures and cash policies
in place
- Property key controls
- The property MUST participate in the
Mesa Police Department Trespass Enforcement
Program
Full Certification
You will receive your full certification once the
property has passed the C.P.T.E.D. review, submitted
a completed Trespass Enforcement Request for the
property, and at least one member of your staff has
completed the required Hotel/Motel training course.
A certificate in the name of the property will show
that the property has passed the security
assessment. This certificate will remain in effect
for one year and will be renewed annually by the
Mesa Police Department, after an audit has been
conducted and your property has passed the annual
C.P.T.E.D evaluation.
Individual certificates will be given to members
of your staff after they have attended the required
training. This certificate is good for three years
and will still be valid, within those three years,
if they transfer properties.
Why Be Part of Crime Free? The
cost of crime can result in property damage and the
loss of income and guests. You lose the ability to
rent a damaged room while it is being repaired.
By being part of the Crime Free Program, you can
help to minimize the possibility of losses due to
criminal activity on your property.
