History
In 1994 the Mesa Police Department
and Mesa Public Schools began the Safe Schools Program. The program initially placed
an officer at Dobson High School. Because of the success of the program it was expanded
through a federal grant to include officers at several high schools and junior high schools.
In 2007, because some grant funding ran out, the
program was supported by Mesa Public Schools and the
Mesa Police Department. Funding for 2008 comes from
Mesa Public Schools, Gilbert Public Schools and the
Mesa Police Department.
Six of the school resources officers assigned to
the high schools are still funded through grants.
