The new cameras are smaller in size and provide clearer images for better
vehicle and driver identification. The red light cameras are triggered by
sensors installed in the roadway. When a vehicle runs a red light, the cameras
take high resolution color digital photos of the violation event. The cameras
are not triggered by vehicles that are in the intersection when the light turns
red. The program operates 24 hours a day and in all weather conditions.
This program also utilizes intersection speed cameras and
streaming video, which
detect and document speed violations through intersections. Some of the most serious
crashes that occur are caused by drivers speeding through intersections,
regardless of the color of the light. Streaming video operates within the high
resolution high speed cameras that are programmed to capture red light
violations, as well as vehicles traveling in excess of the posted speed limit.
The video is recorded onto a DVD and presented to the court during hearings that
involve the streaming video. The City has identified our most dangerous
intersections based on crash data captured. These top intersections for crashes
and/or fatalities will be equipped with the new speed on green.
The camera will capture images of the vehicle as well as the
facial image of the driver of those vehicles. The cameras are configured to
capture speeders driving 11 miles per hour or more over the posted speed limit
through the intersection. See photos.
Fixed-Site Speed Cameras have been
introduced in the Rhodes Junior High corridor on
West Baseline Road, between Pennington and Longmore.
The photo enforcement system at Rhodes Junior High
is the first mid-block speed camera in Mesa and in
the State of Arizona. The cameras will capture
speeding violations that occur while the school zone
lights are flashing with a reduced speed limit of 35
miles per hour and during non-school time periods
with a speed limit of 45 miles per hour. Currently,
the 35 mile per hour school zone flashing lights are
operational from 7:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. Monday
through Friday. The photo enforcement system will
monitor traffic in both directions of travel. The
speed detection technology in the system in
synchronized with the flashing light to ensure
violations are captured with the appropriate speed
limit. The use of fixed-site speed cameras sends a
clear message that Mesa has zero tolerance for
school zone speeding as it puts children and the
community at risk.
At this time, Rhodes Junior High is the only planned
location for this type of fixed-site speed camera
photo enforcement.
This newly expanded program will continue to provide safer Mesa
streets. Additionally, with the implementation of this digital technology,
drivers who receive notices of violation will be able to view their violation,
pay fines and schedule a hearing online. In the past, drivers had to physically
visit a service center to view their violation images.
The new digital cameras are supplied and installed by American
Traffic Solutions, the leading provider of state-of-the-art, turn-key vehicle
detection and imaging technology designed and built specifically for photo
traffic enforcement.
Remember to slow down and stop on red.
