Volunteer Opportunity
Help To Remove Impaired Drivers from the Road
Driving under the influence is a dangerous issue affecting
all of us. If you would enjoy firsthand opportunity to combat
this problem, you may wish to be a DUI Van Assistant volunteer.
Your duties would include driving the DUI Van to and from that
shift's location, stocking the van's supplies, and assisting
officers with processing DUI suspects by logging information ,
taking photographs, telephoning for taxis, and taking custody of
evidence, which is checked into the Headquarters building at the
end of the shift. You must be able to deal tactfully and
professionally with persons who are impaired; you may be exposed
to foul language and emotional extremes while on duty in this
position.
Desired Skills: Experience in driving a
large truck or RV is desirable, although not required. A
helpful, patient, tactful demeanor, including the ability to
deal professionally with agitated or upset suspects, is needed.
Attention to detail and handling evidence with care are
required.
Special Requirements: You must possess a
valid Arizona Driver's license. You must successfully pass a
driving test with the DUI van, which will be administered by
MPD's driving instructor.
Hours Needed: Volunteer help is needed
on Friday and Saturday nights throughout the year, typically
starting at 7:00 p.m. and ending anywhere from midnight to 4:00
a.m; volunteers sign up monthly for the shift(s) of their
choice.
