Project Review & Interagency Coordination

The City of Mesa reviews proposed development projects as well as City capital improvement projects with respect to transportation related issues.  Transportation works closely with other City departments such as Engineering, Planning, and Building Safety in reviewing development projects, determining what street improvements are required, and determining if a project is eligible for a City contribution toward the cost of street improvements.

Transportation also works with developers and their representatives to address transportation issues throughout the project development process.  The department reviews all City capital improvement projects affecting City of Mesa streets, and participates on City project teams providing input and technical expertise on transportation concerns.

Staff in this group are the leads in coordinating with other government agencies such as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), and neighboring cities when their projects affect Mesa, and in implementing joint projects with other agencies.  This can involve determining project criteria and Mesa's participation, providing technical guidance and review as plans are developed, and involving other areas of the City as needed.

Traffic Engineering Guidelines

Transportation also provides technical assistance for traffic control for activities related to parades and special events, street functions and construction work zones.  When called upon, this section also provides emergency response in the event of detours, lane/street closures and natural disasters. Traffic Barricade Manual -  The City of Mesa has adopted the 2007 City of Phoenix Traffic Barricade Manual with the City of Mesa Addendum (effective August 6, 2011).
