Natural Gas Safety

About Natural Gas

Natural gas is developed naturally underground at varying depths and geological formations.  Although not a byproduct of crude oil, it is sometimes found in oil-bearing formations.

Natural gas is one of the most abundant energy sources in North America.  The City of Mesa's gas system  is connected to a network of interstate pipelines that allows the company to draw upon supplies from New Mexico, Texas, and Colorado.

The City of Mesa promotes the use of natural gas as a safe, convenient, economical, and  environmentally clean fuel.  It is one of the safest fuels available for a wide range of uses including:  space and water heating, cooking, clothes drying, space cooling, decorative lighting, industrial processes, and motor vehicles.

Natural gas is a colorless, odorless gas that is lighter than air.  Because natural gas is lighter than air it will rise
                   if there is a leak.

An odor similar to "rotten eggs" is added to our gas as a safety measure to assist in detecting even the smallest leaks in appliances, house piping, or the distribution system.
