2020 Census Task Force created in Mesa

Post Date:10/11/2018 2:38 PM
  • Lead Mesa City Council has agreed to form the City's 2020 Census Task Force. The task force will meet quarterly until Summer 2020 to create and oversee implementation of a strategic outreach and engagement plan to educate and motivate people to respond to the Census

Mesa City Council, at this morning’s Study Session, unanimously agreed to form the City’s 2020 Census Task Force. District 3 Councilmember Francisco Heredia was named as committee chair. The task force is Mesa’s version of a Census Complete Count Committee, which are coalitions commonly used by cities, states and regional governments to educate, empower and motivate people to respond to the Census.

"The 2020 Census is an important event not only for Mesa, but for the entire country," said Councilmember Heredia. "I am looking forward to the first meeting and working together with my fellow Task Force members as we begin the very important task of making sure each and every person is counted."

The Census, which is mandated by the U.S. Constitution, occurs every 10 years and establishes official population counts. It is used for representative apportionment in the U.S. House and is the basis upon which millions of federal dollars and state shared revenues are distributed from the federal government to state and local governments like Mesa.

Mesa’s 2020 Census Task Force is composed of 24 individuals representing 23 organizations from non-profit, business, healthcare, faith-based, education and other critical segments of the community. The task force will meet quarterly between November 2018 and Summer 2020 and will create and oversee the implementation of a strategic outreach and engagement plan.
