Mayor John Giles has signed a proclamation mandating the closure of all restaurants and bars with the exception of drive-through, pick-up and delivery options. In addition, the mandate includes the closure of gyms, fitness centers, work-out studios and entertainment venues like movie theaters, arcades and bowling alleys where people tend to gather. While this is not an exhaustive list, Mayor Giles expects businesses and venues that host gatherings with more than 10 people also comply with the mandate. The mandate will go into effect at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 20.
“As we have seen the spread of COVID-19 continue to grow in Arizona, we have to put the health of our community first and foremost,” Mesa Mayor John Giles said. “We do not take this decision lightly but protecting ourselves and one another through social distancing, is the right thing to do at this time.”
This additional step is being taken after careful consideration and discussions with the Arizona Restaurant Association, Mesa Chamber of Commerce, Arizona Asian Chamber of Commerce and my fellow Councilmembers.
“We know this will have an impact on many businesses and their employees in an economy that is already under tremendous pressure,” Giles said. “With that being said, we encourage our residents to continue to patronize these establishments that offer modified services while practicing social distancing and other CDC-recommended precautions.”
Many Mesa businesses have been proactive in changing their service models whether that is switching to pick-up and delivery, selling merchandise online only or hosting fitness classes online. These efforts are appreciated and encouraged to maintain the health and safety of the community while supporting the local economy.
