The 2018 Sign Ordinance was adopted by City Council on July 9, 2018 and will take effect on August 9, 2018.
The update was developed to make it consistent with the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Reed v. Town of Gilbert, make it more user-friendly and to update requirements for both portable and permanent signs. The last major update to the Mesa Sign Code was in 1986 with several sections receiving minor revisions since that time. The current sign code is part of Mesa's Zoning Ordinance - Title 11, Chapter 41. The 2018 Sign Ordinance will replace Chapter 41 with the following ten chapters:

Chapter 42: Portable Signs
Chapter 43: Permanent Signs
Chapter 44: Historic Signs
Chapter 45: Prohibited Signs
Chapter 46: Use Permits, Variances, and Interpretations
Chapter 47: Sign Permits
Chapter 48: Nonconforming Signs
Chapter 49: Maintenance, Removal, Disposal, Violations, and Enforcement
Chapter 50: Definitions
To help prepare for the implementation of the 2018 Sign Ordinance, staff is working on updated sign permit submittal requirements, submittal guides, and creating information brochures.
