AZLabs is a full-service, security-enhanced campus designed to host companies requiring workspace to perform sensitive contracts, research and engineering projects. AZLabs provides offices, laboratories, and vault space, ideally suited for such highly sensitive projects.

AZLabs has retained the security protocols of the former U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory. AZLabs can support a broad range of sensitive projects including experiments, prototype evaluations, and distributed test and training with access to a highly skilled, DoD-focused workforce.

AZLabs lies adjacent to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, Arizona State University Polytechnic campus, Chandler-Gilbert Community College, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Mesa. This strategic location offers tenants proximity to existing restricted airspace and military operations areas (MOAs), via three 10,000-foot runways, taxiways, aircraft parking, and access to fuel for U.S. Government and military patrons.


Mesa, Arizona has a long and proud history in aviation and aerospace. As a location with nearly perfect flying weather all year, Mesa is home to two airports that were instrumental in the training of military pilots.

In 1941, Williams Air Force Base was built to serve as the Army Air Corps West Coast Training Center where thousands of pilots were trained for battle in World War II. Fighter pilots were trained using the AT-10 Wichita, after which some were trained to fly the P-38 Lightning and others the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. Later the Base also served as the home of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). In 1993 the Base was closed as part of a Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC). In 1994 it was opened as Williams Gateway Airport and renamed Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in 2007.

On June 23, 2011, the Mesa, Arizona City Council approved an interim lease with the U.S. Air Force (USAF) for the AFRL, and a property management/business assistance agreement with Alion Science and Technology, then renamed the facility Arizona Laboratories for Security and Defense (AZLabs).  In 2014, the City entered into a purchase agreement with the USAF thereby assuming ownership of AZLabs.

AZLabs has retained the security protocols of the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and can support a broad range of sensitive projects, including experiments, prototype evaluations, and distributed test and training with access to a highly skilled, DoD-focused workforce, and conferences and workshops.

AZLabs continues to enhance its capabilities and features to improve upon the full-service that it already offers to tenants.


AZLabs is managed by Alion Science and Technology for the City of Mesa, AZ. Alion is a technology solution company delivering technical expertise and operational support to the Department of Defense, civilian government agencies and commercial customers.
