More information about Census 2020

Background: The U.S. Federal Government apportions seats in congress and distributes billions annually to states and localities based on total resident population. Thousands of business decisions are made based on population, like where corporations build new facilities. Once every ten years, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a count of all persons which sets the baseline population in Mesa for the next decade. Unfortunately, many people do not understand the importance of the Census and fail to respond.

Mission: Mayor John Giles, with concurrence of the entire Mesa City Council, composed this task force with key community organizations in education, health, business, non-profit and faith-based community. The task force will develop and implement a strategic marketing and outreach initiative that educates and motivates individuals to respond to the Census. The task force will convene November 2018 and is expected to conclude summer 2020 after the Census is complete.
