Community Review Sessions

The Community Review Session, showcasing the work of the Use of Force Best Practices project and originally scheduled for June 25th has been POSTPONED due to the increase in COVID19 cases reported in our State. The event will be rescheduled at a future date.

The Community Review Session hosted by this project, provides a forum during which members of the community are able to discuss and learn about updates to the use of force policies based on recommendations by the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF). The format for this session will be an open forum whereby each of the recommendations, their corresponding policy and final decisions reached by the leadership team, are displayed on poster boards around the room. Community members are invited to view the posters, educate themselves about these updates and ask questions of the evaluators, all members of the Department, who will be on hand to support the session.

Overview

The Mesa Police Department has concluded an evaluation of industry best practice use of force recommendations from the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), and is in the process of implementing policy changes at the Mesa Police Department based on final guidance provided by the Chief of Police and Assistant Chiefs. Each recommendation received an evidence-based evaluation by a member of the MPD leadership team and considered industry trends, relevant policy, training curriculum, and implementation requirements. A review committee, comprised of members of the Mesa Police Department training staff, Special Operations, Patrol, Supervisors, Policy, Legal, Professional Standards, Mesa Police Association, Fraternal Order of Police, Mesa community and professors from ASU, convened every two weeks for the purpose of asking questions and providing feedback based on their own experience and research. The committee was not an oversight committee and did not make recommendations on use of force cases. The committee provided feedback on the PERF recommendations only, which was considered by the lead police subject matter expert in preparation of their final policy guidance to the Chief of Police and Assistant Chiefs.

The Use of Force Best Practices Project invites community members to view, for each recommendation, the presentation to the review committee and the final guidance presented to the Chief of Police and Assistant Chiefs.
