Community Review Sessions:

April 16, 2020
The Community Review Sessions provide members of the community an opportunity to participate in the evaluation process. The format for these sessions will be an open forum whereby each of the recommendations, their corresponding policy and final decision (if approved) are displayed on poster boards. Community members will be able to view the recommendations, educate themselves about use of force best practices, and share their feedback, which may be considered by the evaluator in their final guidance. The evaluators will be on hand to support the session and answer questions from the community.

Overview

The objective of the Use of Force Best Practices Project is to evaluate industry best practice use of force recommendations for consideration of adoption by the Mesa Police Department. There is a total of sixty-six (66) recommendations, each of which gets an evidence-based evaluation by a member of the Mesa Police Department leadership. The evaluation considers industry trends, relevant policy, training curriculum, and implementation requirements. Every two weeks, a meeting is convened wherein four (4) recommendations are presented to a review committee for questions and feedback based on their own experience and research. The committee feedback is considered by the evaluator in preparation of final guidance to the Chief of Police and Assistant Chiefs.

The Use of Force Best Practices Project invites community members to view, for each recommendation, the presentation to the review committee and the final guidance presented to the Chief of Police and Assistant Chiefs.
