Project Description

Existing sewer mains have reliably served this area of Mesa for over 50 years. However, with continuous growth additional sewer capacity is needed. To address this, Mesa has contracted with B&F Contracting to install a new 15-inch diameter sewer. Completing this work will require updating and/or relocating portions of existing utilities, including water and gas lines, as well as sections of the storm drain system.

To reduce roadway closures/restrictions, the sewer line installation and utility relocations will be done in various phases; at times, work will continue through the night or on weekends where possible. Due to the recent water main break in 2024 and having an overlapping work area, the reconstruction of the Gilbert and McKellips intersection has also been incorporated into this project after the utility work completes.

Project Phasing

Gilbert/McKellips Area - Work crews are actively installing a new sewer line and associated manholes on McKellips Road between Harris Drive and Gentry Drive (east of Gilbert Road). The sewer alignment is located in the center of the roadway, and traffic has been routed around the active work area. Lane restrictions are required during construction and are restored as soon as possible as work progresses. Sewer installation in this area is anticipated to be completed by the end of March 2026.

Following completion of the sewer work, intersection improvements at Gilbert and McKellips will begin. This work will include installation of new ADA-compliant corner ramps, as well as removal and replacement of asphalt extending several hundred feet in all directions from the intersection. Electronic message boards will be used to provide advance notice of upcoming traffic restrictions.

Utility Relocations - Stapley/Brown Area

Final sewer line installation of the project will occur in the Stapley/Brown intersection. Heavy equipment, crews and bypass pumps will be operating in the area. Due to the location of the new sewer line installation, various traffic restrictions will be needed at the intersection. Please note and follow posted signage and detour routes.

This final phase is expected to last from 4/14/26 to 5/4/26.
