Project Description

Existing sewer mains have reliably served this area of Mesa for over 50 years. However, with continuous growth additional sewer capacity is needed. To address this, Mesa has contracted with B&F Contracting to install a new 15-inch diameter sewer. Accomplishing this task will require updating and/or relocating sections of existing utilities like water and gas lines and some storm drains.project area map

To reduce roadway closures/restrictions, the sewer line installation and utility relocations will be done in various phases; at times, work will continue through the night or on weekends where possible. Due to the recent water main break in 2024 and having an overlapping work area, the reconstruction of the Gilbert and McKellips intersection has also been incorporated into this project after the utility work completes.

Project Phasing

Work crews are actively installing new sewer pipe and manholes on McKellips Rd and are moving east away from Stapley Dr. In the coming days the work area will be approaching Harris Street. The installation will ultimately continue east and ending within the Gilbert/McKellips intersection. The alignment of sewer line is located in the center of McKellips Rd with curb lanes open for east/west travel. Access points adjacent to side streets or driveways will be opened when possible. To minimize the duration of traffic disruptions, crews are working seven days a week.

Utility Relocations - In mid-November, a section of large diameter waterline will be relocated within the Gilbert/McKellips intersection. This work will take several days to complete and will restrict left turns through portions of the intersection. Electronic message boards will be posted to notify the traveling public about the date/duration of the restriction. Utility relocation efforts are nearing completion at the Stapley/McKellips intersection. Traffic control devices are removed nights and weekends when safely possible.
