Development Services Internship Program

The Developmental Services Department offers two internship positions.

Planning - Long Range Planning and Historic Preservation

Gain hands-on experience in municipal development through Mesa's Civil Plans Examiner Internship. Interns assist the Civil Plan Review Division with civil plan review research, case preparation, customer service, and interpreting Mesa development requirements and review processes while working alongside experienced planning professionals.

Applicants should have completed the equivalent of three years of college-level study in Engineering, Sustainability, Environmental Science, Public Administration, or a related field, along with coursework or experience in research and problem-solving related to planning or land use. Internship assignments range from 3 to 12 months, depending on departmental needs.

Plans Examiner - Civil Assessment

Planning Interns gain practical experience supporting planning projects, conducting research, analyzing land use and development issues, and assisting professional planning staff with a variety of departmental initiatives. Interns work under the general direction of the Planning Director and receive training and supervision from a Senior Planner or Historic Preservation Advisor/Planner through observation, discussion, and review of their work.

Applicants should have a combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to three years of college-level study with a major in Urban Planning, Urban Geography, Historic Preservation, Public History, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration, History, or a related field, along with approximately three to six months of related research or planning experience. College-level coursework and class projects may be applied toward the required experience, and graduate-level education is highly desirable. Internship assignments range from 3 to 12 months, depending on departmental needs.
