This project is to extend a buried tunnel under Val Vista Drive, eliminating the need for pathway users to cross over the roadway surface. The tunnel will include interior lighting and concrete approach ramps for pedestrians, cyclists, and equestrian users. Temporary crossing signals will remain operational until the tunnel construction is complete.
This tunnel represents the final segment of a multi-use pathway already in use. The path follows the South Canal from McDowell/Lehi Road up to the 202 Freeway and then cuts back along the ADOT right-of-way up to Val Vista Drive spanning approximately 2.5 miles. Two trailheads are anticipated to be constructed in the future. One at McDowell Road and the South Canal and the other at Val Vista Drive north of the 202 Freeway.
The path includes a 12 foot wide paved surface and an adjacent decomposed granite surface designed for equestrian users. These enhancements aim to improve safety, accessibility, and connectivity for all users of the pathway system.
