Improvements

What improvements are included?
Reconstruction of 1.5 miles of Broadway Road with:

  • 6-foot sidewalks and ADA ramps
  • Bike lanes
  • New full depth pavement and curb and gutter
  • New pavement markings and signage
  • Upgraded traffic signals at Stapley and Horne
  • Three pedestrian hybrid beacons at Lesueur, Olive, and Eagles Park (near Lowell Elementary)
  • Seven new bus shelters
  • Street lighting, landscaping, storm drains, and private irrigation
  • Replacement of aging water/gas lines and undergrounding of electric lines
  • Removal of wooden utility poles on the north side of Broadway Road (Lesueur to Horne)

Are shade and landscaping included?
Some trees and landscaping are planned, but limited right-of-way and shallow utilities restrict how much shade can be added.

Why is so much utility work being done?
Utilities along Broadway date back as far as the 1940s. The project replaces old water and gas lines and moves overhead electrical lines underground.

Impacts

How will construction impact traffic?
Lane closures, reduced lanes, and turn restrictions will occur. Traffic will remain open but slower. Congestion is expected, especially around Broadway and Stapley.

What about pedestrian safety?
Temporary but safe walking routes will remain open on both sides of Broadway. Extra attention will be focused near schools and parks.

Will schools be impacted?
Yes. Mesa is coordinating with area schools to ensure safe routes for students.

Will businesses remain accessible?
Yes. Access will be maintained, though driveways may close briefly during paving or utility work.

Funding

How much will the project cost and how is it funded?
Estimated at $65 million, this project is funded by Mesa’s 2020 Street Bonds, Utility Systems Revenue Obligations, Transportation and Maricopa County Flood Control District Funds.
