Water Treatment

Millions of gallons of raw water are treated daily at three water treatment facilities in Mesa to provide clean, safe, reliable water services to the community.

We must meet rigorous drinking water standards established by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ). All treatment plants are operated by ADEQ-certified water operators.

The Brown Road Water Treatment Plant has a treatment capacity of 72-million gallons per day and the Signal Butte Water Treatment Plant has a treatment capacity of 24-million gallons per day. The raw water that feeds into the plants comes from the Central Arizona Project (Colorado River).

Raw water from the Salt River Project (Salt and Verde River) is treated at the Val Vista Water Treatment Plant, jointly owned with the City of Phoenix, with Mesa's portion of the treatment capacity being 90-million gallons per day.

The diagram below shows how raw water is treated to drinking water standards. The Signal Butte Water Treatment Plant also uses state-of-the-art ozone disinfection. To learn more about water treatment and testing, read Mesa's annual Water Quality Consumer Confidence Report.
