We have teamed up with Local First Arizona (LFA) to recognize independently owned businesses that are doing good for the planet through the Arizona Green Business Program. The certification process aims to recognize leaders in sustainability and assist others in adopting eco-friendly practices. There is currently no fee to participate. Nearly 100% of equipment and infrastructure in the business is refurbished or second-hand, keeping materials in circulation for as long as possible. Booch Haus sources an increasing percentage of its products including kombucha and plants as locally as possible.

Construction and maintenance of compressed natural gas (CNG) and renewable natural gas (RNG) refilling infrastructure for residential and commercial services.

While CNG is a fossil fuel, CNG Services of AZ is an early champion of building infrastructure that captures RNG from anaerobic digestion to be used as vehicle fuel. Other benefits include extended engine life, and cleaner emissions vs fuel-fed internal combustion vehicles.

EVUPC plays a crucial role in the veterinary medicine ecosystem, acting as the middle ground between a general practice veterinarian and emergency room. The practice was built with efficiency in mind – choosing energy efficient equipment like examination lights, a washing machine, computers, and a new variable speed HVAC system. Sinks and toilets are all low flow. They use bio-based, refillable plastic bottles for medication and recycle 100% of their latex examination gloves with Terracycle.

Garden stands contain a seed library, gardening equipment, pots, and information on how to cultivate plants and food. Greenbelt prioritizes low water use, climate-adapted, and native plants as a water and air conservation solution in Arizona.

In Mesa since 2019, Knuckle Sandwiches is not your typical sandwich shop. All of Knuckle Sandwiches' meats are prepared in-house with family recipes, with vegetables and other ingredients sourced as locally as possible. In 2025, Knuckle Sandwiches completed a plumbing and fixture retrofit that will conserve over 150,000 gallons of water a year.

Local First Arizona’s Mesa Community Kitchens is available to food entrepreneurs who are looking to grow their business and are in need of a fully equipped and licensed space to begin or expand their operation. Businesses incubated in the Community Kitchen have access to the resources including a large walk-in refrigerator, dry food storage, dedicated wash area, cooking equipment and more.

All on-site water fixtures are low-flow and efficient (sinks, pre-rinse spray valves, ice machine, toilets) 100% of unused food scraps are composted, roof-mounted solar panels, 100% LED lights and energy efficient kitchen equipment.

The gallery in downtown Mesa offers executive suites, an art gallery, and Studio 101 for meetings and classes. Committed to sustainability, the historic building, built in 1898, underwent a comprehensive energy audit, leading to high-efficiency lighting, programmable thermostats, and dual-pane windows. Social Spin is a laundromat that provides full-service laundry while supporting unsheltered people and providing services to the community including job fairs, heat relief, and COVID vaccinations. For deliveries, Social Spin has greened their fleet, using an electric transit van and a hybrid mini van. This has dramatically reduced their fuel costs and transportation emissions.

Stardust Building Supplies is a non-profit organization focused on reducing landfill waste. They operate reuse centers in Mesa and Glendale, offering affordable, gently used building materials, including cabinets, appliances, and furniture. Their deconstruction services help salvage materials and promote sustainability in the community. Originally opened as a movie house in 1924, The Nile Theater and The Nile Coffee Shop have evolved over the last 100 years. A key priority is to cultivate a culture of sustainability among employees through special training in waste diversion and conservation practices. The vegan menu emphasizes ingredients sourced from local growers, supporting a sustainable food economy. The Nile reuses and recycles materials while composting all food waste, donating it to Celestial Stem for local community gardens. During recent renovations, it used bricks from its original 1924 construction, exemplifying a commitment to zero waste.
