Controlled Substance & Fire Debris

The Controlled Substance Unit plays a critical role in supporting public safety by providing high-quality, accurate, objective and timely forensic science examinations of suspected controlled substances. The most common controlled substances analyzed in the lab are currently fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine. The unit conducts a full range of analyses, beginning with preliminary color testing and advancing to confirmatory examinations using scientific instrumentation.

In addition to laboratory analysis, the unit supports our partner agencies' Police Department field drug testing programs by offering guidance, training, and quality assurance to ensure reliable preliminary testing in the field. Trained members within the Controlled Substances Unit also conduct Fire Debris Analysis to assist in the detection of the presence of accelerants for Arson Investigations. Scientists also provide expert testimony in court as needed. Together, these efforts enhance investigative efficiency, promote evidentiary integrity, and contribute to safer communities.
