Latent Print Unit

Forensic Scientists assigned to the Latent Print Unit perform examinations of friction ridge evidence, which includes latent fingerprints and palm prints, and compares them to known individuals. This is performed using the Arizona Automated Biometric Identification System (AZABIS) and the FBI’s Next Generation Integration System (NGI). Both systems contain millions of criminal and civilian fingerprint records. Trained personnel within the Latent Print Unit also conduct examinations on unknown footwear and/or tire prints and impressions to known shoes and tires.

 

 

Latent Print Unit members compare latent fingerprints collected from crimes scenes and evidence items to know exemplars in an attempt to make identifications.
Latent Print Unit members search latent fingerprints collected at scenes and on evidence items in the AZABIS database to find potential fingerprint records to compare the latent against.
