Arizona’s fall weather brings cooler mornings and evenings, making it a good time to check your home’s natural gas appliances. Before turning on your furnace or enjoying a cozy evening by the gas fireplace, follow these simple tips to help keep your family safe.
- Use appliances as directed: Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe operation.
- Check the flame: A steady blue flame is a good sign. A yellow or orange flame may mean an appliance is not working properly and needs to be checked by a qualified professional.
- Know the three signs of a gas leak:
- Smelling a rotten egg odor: Natural gas has a rotten egg smell added to help you detect a leak.
- Hearing a hissing sound from a gas pipe, appliance or meter.
- Seeing unusual changes in soil, dead or dying plants, blowing dirt, or bubbling water.
